The Centre for Performance Research, Cardiff, Wales, UK are pleased to
announce the 1995 Summer School:


BODY MEMORY IN PERFORMANCE


WORKSHOPS ~ PRESENTATIONS ~ CONFERENCE ~ PERFORMANCES

Up to four weeks in North Wales and at Lancaster University

Monday July 17th - Saturday August 12th, 1995

Work at the cutting edge of performance through extended practical workshops
with some of the most original professional practitioners working in the fields
of physical theatre, dance, mime and live art in Europe today.

Choose from a package of one week, two week or three week workshops.

Conference weekend: Friday July 28th to Sunday July 30th.

The 1995 Summer School, BODY MEMORY, will be a practical investigation
into the body as a site of memory, and how this concept is understood and
utilised in theatre, dance, mime and live art.  This is an opportunity to take
part in a challenging exploration of the role of body memory in performance
in a supportive and vigorously creative environment.

Workshops will be led by leading practitioners in the fields of theatre, dance,
mime and live art. Contributors to 1994's Summer School included:  BRITH
GOF, GAY SWEATSHOP, ALASTAIR MACLENNAN, WENDY
HOUSTOUN, and IOU THEATRE.  BODY MEMORY, the 1995 Summer
School, will involve companies and individuals of similar stature and calibre.

The Conference will investigate BODY MEMORY in a more discursive form,
and will continue CPR's commitment to create stimulating and lively debate
through provocative presentations, performance and forum sessions.  In
addition to academics and practitioners involved in performance, we will also
invite contributions from the fields of body therapy, psychology, sports
science, anthropology, and other body-based disciplines.

Participants to the Summer School will be professional performance
practitioners:  dancers, actors, theatre-makers, live artists, and other
interested professionals.

In all forms of performance, the body's ability to remember and to
communicate (synaesthetically) with spectators will always be summoned,
either consciously or unconsciously, during the creative process.  The
practical work in BODY MEMORY will allow practitioners to experience, compare,
and contrast the different techniques and approaches used in theatre, dance,
mime and live art, thus enriching their own practice.

BODY MEMORY manifests itself in many different forms, for example:  the
body as document;  the socially and culturally constructed body;  the
performer's transcendence of the physical patterns of daily life;  collective
body memory:  codified movement handed down from one generation to the
next.  Other themes include:  how memory resides in the body;  how the
body's memories are released and harnessed to create performance material;
how different body training methods attempt to 'erase' an individual's daily
and inculturated body memories;  how certain therapies manipulate the body
directly to release forgotten emotions;  how performers' bodies must be able
'forget' the imprint of their last piece when making new work, and yet must
also learn to 'remember' movement patterns to be able to perform.
