a few miles from Nice and the Italian border

     special topics in Medieval language and poetry 
     ...and live performance by students and faculty 



"LO GAI SABER: La Chanson Poetique au Moyen Age". Dans l'arriere pays nicois,
Anne Azema et Joel Cohen dirigeront à Coaraze un stage d'une semaine sur la
musique des troubadours et des trouveres (cours de chant individuel,
masterclasses,
travail d'etude des sources musicales en preparation de performance, approche
de la
langue et la poesie, etc....). Concert de fin de stage. Du 1er au 6
septembre, 1997.

   Pierre Bec invite au stage de Coaraze

Le professeur Pierre Bec, une autorite mondiale du monde la litterature
occitane
medievale, sera l'invite d'honneur du stage de Coaraze les 1er et 2
septembre. Il
parlera de la structure, de la grammaire, et du son du provencal medieval,
ainsi que
de l'univers poetique des troubadours. 

Professor Pierre Bec, one of the worlds' foremost authorities on medieval
Occitan literature, will be the honored guest of the stage at Coaraze on
September 1 and 2. He will talk on the stucture, grammar, and sound of Old
Provençal, and on the poetic world of the troubadours.

     afternoon: medieval language and literature, with Pierre Bec
     late afternoon: individual auditions for active participants

     morning: introduction medieval notation; using manuscript sources
     afternoon: medieval language and literature, with Pierre Bec

     September 3
     morning: problems of vocal style and singing technique in medieval music
     afternoon: individual lessons

     September 4
     morning: phrasing, rhythm, and questions of instrumental accompaniment
     afternoon: individual lessons

     September 5
     morning: individual lessons
     afternoon: master class, in preparation for September 6 performance
     evening: dress rehearsal for September 6 performance

     September 6
     afternoon: individual lessons
     evening: performance with Anne Azema, Joel Cohen, and workshop
     participants
