Several people asked me how I realized the Real Player presentations on this Web bsite. Easy! Real.com offers you tools create simple presentations free of charge. They are not as complete as the "Plus" versions that you should buy. But it's enough to develop what you can see on certain pages of this site. This page is going you to demonstrate how to create and to implant these presentations on your Web site.
After some presentations, you'll only want to make it even more! You can try the other tools available on Real.com's site. {Real.com}
Before dashing into Real Slideshow's use, it's necessary to have a project. What do you want to speak about? Your holidays? Or a subject that dear to your heart? A presentation Slideshow contains at least two elements: voice and the images. You must plan your presentation by taking account of these two elements. What do you go to say and present?
It's also necessary to consider the public whom you want to join. It's necessary to know their level of knowledge on the subject. You will not present in the same way the concepts of the nuclear physics to experts that to the general public! Because the presentation will be seen on the Internet, it's necessary also to think of the connection speed of the user. The public will connect at the presentation by the company's network or with a 56K modem? The difference in throughtput available for data is rather big.
To help me to structure my ideas for the presentation, I use Excel. Yes Excel! take the tool that you prefer: Word, PowerPoint or any other to organise your thoughs. The advantage of Excel is that I can calculate quickly the length and the maximal width of the images that I will be using in the presentation. It allows me to determine the size of the window of presentation. I place also the main ideas that I connect with the images. It's also necessary to prepare the text that will go with each of these images. For that purpose, I prefer another pencil and paper instead of a word processor. In each is own method!
| So, before even opening Slideshow, it's necessary
that you have the images and the text that you'll dictate in the program
or with a sound editor. You should also create a folder where you can save
your presentation project and the images. Another file would be interesting
to put down(deposit) there the elements that Slideshow will generate and
that you can download on the Internet.
Here is an example in the way whose files I save on my hard drive. There is a file that contains the projects and the other one for files generated by Slideshow. |
When you planned your oral presentation and prepared the images you can begin to create your presentation. don't forget to fetch the free Real Slideshow version on Real.com's site. When you were looked and installed the program on your computer, you can open it. {Real.com}
From
the office or from the button Start, open the Real Slideshow 2.0 program.
What , see in the screen is the main menu of Real Slideshow. All that you need to create a presentation for Real Player is in this program. When you'll have entered the images and the oral presentations, the program will take care to generate files required to create a presentation. It will be enough then to transfer these files in a public directory or a server RealSystem to demonstrate your talents to the whole world.
The first zone, Images, is the place where are put down(deposited) the images. Your image in smaller will appear in this zone.
The section Download is to indicate the time that is necessary to download the next image of the presentation. Slideshow does not just make present the current image and your oral presentation, he loads(charges) also the next image. In this way, there are no interruptions during the presentation. The more that the following image is impressive, the more it will set of time! The bar connected with the image will be red if there is not enough time. It will be necessary to lengthen(stretch out) your oral presentation or to reduce the size of the following image.
The zone Voice indicates the length your oral presentation. assure that it is longer than the necessary time to download the next image.
The zone Music can be used to put a background music in your presentation. It's not compulsory. It's better apply the music only having ended the other elements of your presentation. You can know the time required for the music and at that moment it's necessary to change the rhythm. This option is explained from the options of the presentation.
The option Timeline allows to see the length the presentation and to move through the presentation. Buttons + and - allow you to change the vast. In this way, you can see more or less the details of the presentation.
don't forget that under the File menu, there is an option Save Project As. You can so save your project of presentation and return to it later.
Before inserting images, you should take a moment to describe and define your presentation. The options of the presentation are separated under four tabs: Info, Background music, Size and Advanced. These tabs are described in detail in the next part of this Web page.
Note:
To save a little space, certain images of this option were reduced by their
normal size. The space that I cut was unused. I hate vacua!
The general data is used to describe your presentation. The contents of the box Title are used on the page of introduction. The other elements are used by sites of searches to describe your presentation to those that would indeed like to see. take a moment to fill the this part.
From the main menu, press the button Properties.
OR
From
the Edit menu, select the option Project Properties.
A new window appears, offering you all the options for the presentation under four tabs. The first tab, Info, asks you of the general data about the presentation.
You can accompany your oral presentation with the background music. This can heighten the interest of the public to your presentation. It asks also for a higher debit(output) of data to have your voice and the music at the same time. If you select to add of the music, assure that your choice is suited for the presentation.
Select
on the tab Background music.
Besides the images and besides your oral presentation, you can add of the music in background. You can save from a CD or from a file of type .WAV or .MP3. You are not obliged to use this option. But it could give to your presentation a more professional speed(look).
It's better add it after the presentation is ended. You know exactly the duration of the presentation and the images. You can then adjust your musical selection to your presentation. It's as well necessary to consider as the musical track will take more debit(output) at the presentation. It could affect the time of load of the next image of the presentation. To avoid stops(rulings) during the presentation, the next image is loaded with(in charge) with the unused debit(output) by the oral presentation and the background music.
This tab allows you to control the space in the screen that is required to see your presentation. By default, the size is 320 pixels by 240. As for the example that is demonstrated here you can choose the size of your choice. This choice should be determined by the size of the images that you insert into your presentation.
Select
on the option Size.
It's here that your presentation begins to be advantageous. You should know the size of each of the images of your presentation. If you don't know them, you don't worry. Slideshow offers you a way of knowing the size of each of the images under the tab Info of the image. It's enough then to find that is the biggest length and the width from the images and to retranscribe them in this window.
This is certainly the most important window from the properties of the presentation. It's under this tab where you determine the debit(output) of data that will be used to see the data. It's important to know in advance the place where you go to put down(deposit) your presentation. It will be on a server RealSystem or in a directory with Web pages?
Select
the tab Advanced.
Surestream or single fail?
Surestream is the term that Real.com uses to describe the technique to deliver the presentation to the user. This last one verifies the available debit(output) towards(as for) the user. It will send then the presentation to the highest available debit(output). This is possible because the technique Surestream keeps the presentation in several debits(outputs) (28K , 56K...) according to your choices. To the medal is that this file is more impressive than the size(format) single fail. Single misses canned food your presentation in a single debit(output). A person who wants to see your presentation but equipped with material less successful than what you chose as debit(output) can not make it.
verify with your access provider in the Internet or your administrator of network to know if it holds(detains) a server RealSystem and if he allows you to put down(deposit) presentations. Otherwise, you can always put down(deposit) your presentations in the space that is reserved for your Web pages.
Because I know that several readers of this site use another modem in 28.8Kbs and that I don't want to punish them, I chose the options that you see in the previous image.
Select
the debit(output) and the options according to your situation.
You can return to the properties of the presentation any time to modify the options. For the moment, return to the main menu to continue the presentation.
Press the OK button.
The version "More" Slideshow allows you to place in the screen the various elements of your presentation: texts, images and logo of company. You can place these elements according to your choices. The advantage is that elements are placed in a substantial way through your presentation.
From the main screen, press the button Layout.
OR
From
the Edit menu, select the option Project Layout.
You can organize the presentation of the screen to place the images towards your choice as well as towards the supplementary text. However, this option is only available from the version "More" Real Slideshow. experiment with the free version before deciding on you if you need this option.
To
go out of this option, press the OK button.
An important element of a presentation is to have prepared in advance the images that you'll need. Real Slideshow accepts only four sizes(formats) of images: .BMP.JPEG or .JPG.GIF and .PNG. assure that your images are in one of these sizes(formats). Otherwise, you should have to convert them to one of these sizes(formats) before being able to continue.
From the File menu, select the option Add images.
OR
From
the Edit menu, select the option Set Embellishes with images.
Select
the reader and the file containing the images that you need.
Select
the images in the order that you them need for your presentation.
Press the button Open.
The image will be inserted into the zone of the images.
It's always possible to make errors. For example, you chose the bad image. To remove an image.
To
leave the main screen, click the image to be removed.
Press the Delete key ( Del).
The image will be removed from the presentation. You can then resume the operations above to insert another image.
You can also change the order of presentation of the images any time.
Place
the cursor over embellishes with images to move it.
Press the left mouse button and move the image towards the
left or the right-hand side according to the need.
You will see a line of insertion appearing to the screen. This is to drive(guide) to insert you the image in the right place.
Place
the image moved in the place where you want to insert it.
Once
in the right place, Release the mouse button.
It's not enough to have images in the presentation. It's necessary that they are of the right size and followed by an oral presentation. The next part of the Web page concentrates on these points. The options for the images are to separate under four tabs: Info, Edit, Transition and Audio Text and Got.
To change the options of an image:
Click on the image to change the options.
From
the Edit menu, select the option Embellishes with images Properties.
OR
With
the cursor of the mouse, double-click on the image.
The tab Info gives you used data about the image that you selected for your presentation. Among these, you have the length and the width of the image. This is useful to determine the optimal size of the presentation. notice here that the size of the image (original size) is smaller than the image that will be generated by Slideshow (compressed size). This is rather unusual. It's necessary to verify the download time option. It's necessary to make sure that the oral presentation of the previous image or the page of introduction is rather long to cover this period. You have also at that moment during the presentation the image will appear with the option Begin time. The last option, duration, indicates the time when the image will be in the screen.
The "Plus" version (i.e. paying) of Slideshow allows you to add a hypertext link on the image. The user can click the image to show a Web page. You can even create a link towards another presentation!
At the foot of the window, there is button Previous Image and Next Image. These allow you to move quickly from an image to another. They are available in all the tabs of the options of the images.
This tab allows you to change the options of presentation of the image that you selected. You can use that a part of the image or to change its presentation of various ways. These ways are explained later.
Select
the tab Edit.
To the left of the window, you have the original image. In the right-hand side, you have the image inside the frame of presentation. This window offers you two ways to use that a part of the original image. You can use the buttons of frame that surround the image only to choose the part of the image that interests you. You can also use the section Crop to choose exactly the required part.
Just below the image of the section Preview, there are four buttons. These allow you to give a rotation to the image or to give an effect mirror horizontally or vertically. It can give interesting effects.
The most important element is the compression. This determines the time that will be required to load the image for the presentation. More the image is compressed, fewer time than it will begin to load the image. In return, a too much compressed image can lose its quality. The required level of compression depends also on the oral presentation of the previous image. The unused debit(output) of data by the oral presentation is used to download the next image. So, the more you speak for a long time, the less the compression becomes an important factor.
Slideshow allows you also to determine the kind of effect of transition that you can use between two images. You can also control the duration of the transition. You can also choose a different effect of transition as each of the images of your presentation. But this is not a good idea. As for the presentations with PowerPoint, it's important to be substantial in the presentation. It's always preferable to use the same style through the presentation. This includes colors, fonts as well as effects of transitions. You prefer that the public concentrates on your presentation or asks the question: " Which will be the next effect "?
Select
the tab Transition.
The box Typifies allows you to choose among 9 available effects. It's enough to press the button with the arrow pointing downward in the right-hand side of the box to see the list completely. The duration box allows you to determine the duration of the effect. It's not necessary that it's too long. Otherwise, it decentralizes of the oral presentation. Button Play and Stop gives you an printing of the effect in your presentation.
As for the other windows of this section, there is button Previous Image and Next Image to move more quickly in the presentation.
Among the windows of options of images, it's almost certainly in the one that yourselves you go to meet mostly. After all, it's from this window that you go to enter your oral presentation. It's also the part that will be the most frustrating. But it's not because of the software. You should realize several attempts before having an oral presentation that satisfies you. Your degree of preparation of the text and the presentation before returning you so will directly be the opposite of your frustration. get ready in advance!
1 image = 1 oral presentation
The structure of Slideshow imposes to cut you your oral presentation in several parts. You should associate these parts to each of the images that you chose as your presentation. Otherwise, the reader goes to see the image but there will be no voice that is associated to it!
If you bought the version "More" Slideshow, you can also enter of the text. You will have bounded a zone of text in the section Layout of the software.
Select
the Audio tab Text and Got.
Real Slideshow offers you the elementary tools to save your voice and save it in a file of sound of type .WAV or .MP3 on your computer. This recording will be associated to the image during the presentation. You can register again your oral presentation as often as you want it.
To save your oral presentation from Real Slideshow:
Get
ready and place your microphone in the right place.
Press the button Start Record.
The button Start recording will be transformed at this moment into button Stop Record. It will be enough to press again on this button to end the recording.
Speak
clearly and to a good cadence in the microphone.
When
you ended, press the button Stop Record.
The recording with Slideshow has also an important problem. It "cuts" the last second of the recording. To compensate, press the button Stop Record one second having ended.
It's also difficult to save its presentation without making small errors. It's for these reasons that it's better to save your oral presentations by using a publisher(editor) of sound such as Cool Edit or Goldwave. It's seriously necessary to think of possessing and to master a publisher(editor) of sound. How much of us, can say that it will have of moments no hesitance, " e " or halvings words! You can also redo a part of the oral presentation according to your needs.
When you go to save your oral presentation by using a publisher(editor) of sound, this one will ask you at least for three data. It's necessary the number of bits, data, mono or the stereo and the sampling in KHz. These three parameters determine the sound quality of your presentation. More you select the highest values, better will be your presentation. It also determines the size of the sound file at the end of your recording.
The number of bits is the quantity of sound data that the computer keeps during the recording. 16 bits should be enough. Because it's about a recording of your voice, select the mono option. Unless you want to realize stereo effects with the publisher(editor)! The sampling determines the number of times by second Hz) that a sample is taken. 44,1 KHz is the level of sampling that you find on a compact disc. save most possible details. The generator of Real Slideshow's presentation will take care to compress the presentation in their smaller possible format.
The big expected moment came. You chose the options of the presentation, inserted and adjusted the images, added your oral presentation. It remains only to generate the result and to see it. As mentioned first, it's preferable to have to create a file in that Real Slideshow can put down(deposit) the files that compose the presentation.
From the main screen, press the button Generate.
Real Slideshow goes then you ask for the place where you want to save the files that compose your final presentation.
Select
the reader and the file in that you want to put down(deposit) files.
In
the box Name: enter the name that you want to give to your presentation.
Press the Save button.
If it's not the first time when you generate the same presentation, Slideshow will ask you if he can remove the former(ancient) files before continuing. To continue, you should answer OK.
The program will take a moment to generate the necessary files.
The presentation consists of several elements. The file with the extension .smil, pronounced " smile " in English for Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, takes care to synchronize the various elements of the presentation: text, images, voice and music. The page of introduction, with the extension .rt, consists with the tool Real Text of Real.com. The file with the extension .rm contains the audio portion of the presentation: voice and music. The presentation with the image, with the extension .rp, is generated with the tool RealPix of the same company. Real Slideshow combines(organizes) it's tools to create your presentation. The file with the .ram extension is the one that contains the address of the presentation. It's on the one that you should clock(point,paste) to start the presentation. The program generates even a Web page ( .htm ) with the necessary link to begin the presentation. You can use it or adapt it to your needs. To end, files with the .png extension, for Portable Network Graphic, are the images of the presentation. It's generally in this size(format) that the images have the smallest size while saving these qualities. {Real.com}
To
close this window of data, press the OK button.
And here is! The presentation is generated and kept on your hard drive. It's again necessary to bring some modifications to the .ram file and to transfer all these files in a public directory or a server RealSystem.
It's certain that you'll want to hear(understand) your presentation when you have to compress it. You will see exactly how the public goes to see and to hear(understand) your presentation. Maybe that you'll notice if some small alterations(rekey&) are necessary before the general public hears(understands) your presentation!
From
the main screen, select the button Play.
OR
From
the menu Presentation, select the option Play.
Slideshow a magnificent option offers you to transfer your presentation on the Internet. You can decide to transfer your presentation to a public directory that you have already created or a server RealSystem whose account you already have. The assistant for the transfer returns the easy task. Before transferring, it will be necessary that you generated the presentation from the oral presentations and the images that you'll have chosen. It's necessary to have so first to have pressed on the button Generate.
It's necessary you also to have some data in hand.
Is
it for a Web site or a server RealSystem?
What
is the name of the server or the service ftp? Ex: ftp.multimania.com
What
are your user's name and your password?
In
what file do you want to save the presentation?
Personally, I save each of the presentations that I prepare in a different file. I find it easier to manage in this way.
The next part of this Web page is going you to demonstrate how to transfer a presentation to a public directory, server free Web, on the Internet.
From the main screen, press the button Send.
OR
From
the menu Presentation, select the option Send.
The first screen will ask you on that kind of system the presentation will be put down(deposited). Is it on a server Real System or a server of Web pages? For this exercise, it will be a server of Web pages.
From the list of choice, select the type of server that answers your available funds.
Press the button Next.
The next window asks for four major data: the name of the server FTP, in that file will be put down(deposited) the presentation, your user's name and your password. If you want to save your presentation in a file, it will be necessary to have taken time to create it previously.
There is also an option " Save password and gift(donation) t show this dialog again ". If you know that you go to make that a single presentation, you can leave the hook in this box. Even if it takes time to develop a presentation of this kind, you could have to develop the interest to create the others of it. In that case, don't mark this option. If you forgot, you can always cancel this option from the Edit menu and deactivate Hide Send Wizard After Set - up.
The following window asks you for the URL address, after http://, when the presentation will be available. If necessary, add also the file in that the presentation is stored. This is so that Real Slideshow can adjust the file having the .RAM extension and to reach the presentation on the Internet instead of on your computer.
Enter
the required data.
Press the button Next.
Before we beginthe transfer, the assistant informs you about it and gives you a last chance to stop everything.
To
continue, press the button Next.
The transfer will begin and you can follow the progress of the transfer.
However, if it's not the first time when you transfer this presentation, the assistant will notice it and to ask you if he can "crush("give up") the files that were there previously.
To
continue the transfer without the other interruptions, press the button Yes
to All.
After the transfer is completed, the assistant offers you three choices. You can go to the site Real Slideshow to enter of the data to make available your presentation on research sites. It could attract(entice) you a public interested in what you have to offer. For this example, one presumes that the presentation is not still ready for the general public. The option " Go to your slide show Web page " was chosen. The last option returns you to the program Slideshow.
Select
the option of your choice.
Press
the Finish button.
For this example, the assistant opens your Browser to the Web page of the site with a link at your presentation. When Slideshow generated the presentation, it also created this Web page with the link. The assistant adjusted it according to the data that you supplied in the previous windows.
You are now ready to see your presentation resulting from the Internet instead of your hard drive. Furthermore, the public also can now see your leader of work!
As you were able to notice it in the last image, a presentation consists of several files. There are files for the images. There is also a file for the text of introduction in size(format) RealText. The file RealText includes only the title of your presentation. This does not demonstrate all its potential.
However, the size(format) RealText offers much more than what Slideshow generates for the presentation. You can insert options for the window of text, for the presentation of the text and even a little of animation. This looks like the codes HTML with some specific instructions in a lot more. This part of the page will show to you some of the available instructions.
Presentation of the window
RealText offers you five ways to present your text. A said presentation "credits", or normal, and four others that animate(stimulate) or move the text inside the window in various ways.

Having read the instructions of this page, the documentation of Real.com and a little of determination, you can change the contents of the file RealText better to represent the contents of your presentation. The next part of the Web page demonstrates to you just little RealText's potential. Best one of the tools to see and modify the contents is the Block software notes in the file of the accessories of your computer. You read well, the Block notes!
Files with the extensions .RAM.RP.RT and .SMIL are of simple files of type text. You can see and modify the contents if you wish it. However, it's better read and to understand the documentation " Real System Authoring Kit " previously. The reference is at the foot of this page. You can experiment by using a copy of the file. In the worst of the cases, you should regenerate the complete presentation. In the best situation, you can improve your introduction of your presentation.
Open
of your computer the program pad (among accessories).
Change
the type of document of Document text to All (*. *).
Go
to the directory containing files generated by Real Slideshow.
Go
to open the file the extension of that is " .RT "
If you are not capable of discovering who(that) among files with the same name, go to see the properties of the file.
Place
the cursor over one of the files to be examined.
Press the keys Alt and Enter.
You can see the extension " .RT " in the line Name MS-DOS. If it's not the good file, begin again the operation.
OR
Enter
*.rt the box Name.
This is only going to show the files that you look for.
Select
the file of your choice.
Press the file Open.
The left part is the original code created by Real Slideshow to introduce your presentation. The right part includes the modifications that I brought better to represent the contents of my presentation.
| Original code | After certain adaptations |
| < Window Type = " generic " Bgcolor = " black " Duration = " 5.050" Width = "387" Height = "155" Extraspaces = "ignores" > < Pos there = "65" / > |

The changes are rather simple. The bottom changes color to be identical in the heart of the images of the presentation. There are several lines of text that give not only the title of the presentation, but also the name of the author and the date of the conception. There is also a small message to indicate to the users that they should a little wait much longer. Certain parts of the text appear 1 , 2 and 3 seconds after the beginning of the presentation. The reason is the command < time begin =.
Having seen a stalk of what is possible to carry out, I hope that you'll experiment too. You can then see the result by executing the file .RT. RealPlayer should open and to demonstrate you the result. You can then experiment and transfer your realization, with the rest of the files of your presentation, on the Internet.
It's better use the button Send of the main menu. If it does not work, you can always use the FTP service to transfer your files to the right place. However, you should change the URL address of the presentation contained in the file with the .RAM extension. The only contents of the file .RAM are the URL address where meets itself the file with the .SMIL extension. It's this file that manages all the elements of your presentation Real Player.
Open
of your computer the Pad program (in accessories).
Because it involves about a file containing only of the text, it's better to use the Block note.
Change
the type of document of Document text to All (*. *).
Go
to the directory containing files generated by Real Slideshow.
Go
to open the file the extension of that is " .RAM "
If you are not capable of discovering who(that) among files with the same name, go to see the properties of the file.
Place
the cursor over one of the files to be examined.
Press the keys Alt and Enter.
You can see the extension " .RAM " in the line Name MS-DOS. If it's not the good file, begin again the operation.
OR
Enter
*.ram the box Name.
This is only going to show one or several files that you look for.
The contents of the file should look like this:
File:c:\patrice\presentations rs\xlposi\xlposi.smil
It's necessary to change the contents of the file to demonstrate the URL address of the file " .SMIL ". Here is an example of possible address if you place the presentation in a directory of Web pages.
Http://NomDuServeur/NomDuRépertoireSiNécessaire / NomDuFichierSMIL
OR
Http://www.er.uqam.ca/merlin/xw999998/xlposi.smil
If you place the presentation on a server RealSystem with Surestream, contact your administrator of network or your access provider in the Internet to have the data required to reach this server.
And here is. The presentation is ended. The .RAM file is corrected to clock(point, paste) towards the good address of the file .SMIL. It's enough to transfer files towards a public directory or a server RealSystem by using FTP.
