an interdisciplinary research group on communication, information
and society, focuses on the position and role of information (in all
its forms) and communication within the dynamics of contemporary societies.
More specifically, it examines the changing interaction between the
production and consumption of information, culture and communication
as it is influenced by industrialization, commodification and computerization
(e.g., the wide-spread use of ICT).
research concerns the following:
pertaining to science, culture and communications;
structuring of technologies, programs, contents and services, inasmuch
as they are shaped by varied agents (state, private, professional,
organization in different sectors of production/broadcasting/distribution
of information, knowledge and culture;
circulation and development of social uses of new media and of ICT.
research pays particular attention to the process of globalization
of both trade and sociocultural relations, and to the resulting efforts
to preserve cultural specificity. In this perspective, its research
calls on comparative methods to analyze national and international
issues, specifically in the framework of international cooperation
programs. Gricis draws on these programs to conduct its quantitative
and qualitative inquiries as well as its basic research into the conceptualization
and theorization of the relations between culture, information, communication
