Gricis, an interdisciplinary research group on communication, information and society, focuses on the position and role of information (in all its forms) and communication within the dynamics of contemporary societies. More specifically, it examines the changing interaction between the production and consumption of information, culture and communication as it is influenced by industrialization, commodification and computerization (e.g., the wide-spread use of ICT).

Gricis research concerns the following:

  • policies pertaining to science, culture and communications;
  • the structuring of technologies, programs, contents and services, inasmuch as they are shaped by varied agents (state, private, professional, individual-public);
  • work organization in different sectors of production/broadcasting/distribution of information, knowledge and culture;
  • the circulation and development of social uses of new media and of ICT.

Gricis research pays particular attention to the process of globalization of both trade and sociocultural relations, and to the resulting efforts to preserve cultural specificity. In this perspective, its research calls on comparative methods to analyze national and international issues, specifically in the framework of international cooperation programs. Gricis draws on these programs to conduct its quantitative and qualitative inquiries as well as its basic research into the conceptualization and theorization of the relations between culture, information, communication and society.
