Nature, Discourse, and the 'Crisis of Imagery'

Persons wishing to initiate radically novel conversations often claim to be thwarted by deficiencies in conventional language. In the consequence of this lament, considerable attention has been paid to the vagaries of vocabulary. But there have also been recurring suggestions of a non-linguistic element in the genesis of ideational novelty, an element frequently, though not exclusively or adequately, referred to as 'imagery'. And if, as claimed, this is an essential factor in the genesis of alternative forms for thought and discourse, further consideration seems warranted. That possibility, along with the intimations of a 'crisis of imagery', constitutes the concern of this paper.
