Kenya Student Internships

Since Summer 2007, in collaboration with Green Power NGO, we have operated a small research office in Kianyaga , just north of Kutus on the southern slopes of Mt. Kenya in East Africa. This office has been the base of our evaluation activities on the impact of rural electrification through a randomized experiment, and has been the base for our community outreach activities. For example, we have helped construct an office for participating communities, equip it, and helped setting up administrative structures. We have also undertaken training activities and are holding weekly seminars with the leadership of the local community based organizations (CBOs) to inform and engage (thousands of) local members on their micro hydro rural electrification projects.

In doing so, we have been supported by 6 students from UQAM, 2 students from UCU, and 1 student from McGill. Also, three of our Kenyan research trainees have been offered scholarships to attend UCU in the Netherlands. Through Africa SOMA, we have also offered more than a dozen student internship opportunities in southern Kenya.
